Empowering Families to Finance Health

Hey there, our fundraising campaign is now LIVE, Help us get this solution to homes & communities that need it the most!

Campaign Summary

We are living in a world where disease and risk is universal yet care isn't. Afya Plan team is on a mission to change this. This project is near and dear to us. Our founders, have lost loved ones in the recent past, having experienced the pain and trauma that comes with premature mortality, they decided to improve health outcomes through this innovation.

Our goal is to see that no one has to miss out on life-saving care, treatment or medicine because of financial hardship or no one has to suffer financial ruin a result of out-of-pocket expenditures on healthcare.

What Problem are we solving?

Out of pocket payments for healthcare are a huge problem. This is true for families living in severely disadvantaged communities. It's worth noting that a child from a poor household is 15 times more likely to dies before their 5th birthday compared to one from a well-off one.

In perspective:

Imagine for a second, what would happen in the event of a poor mother with a severely sick child, with no readily available funds or social protection. Well..

  • More often, she will choose to stay at home, opting for wait and see approach.
  • Which means that valuable time is lost, leading to complications and mortality (see stats on child mortality).
  • In cases where care is sort, the patient could end up detained because of pending bills.
  • Sometimes, the household will part with a key asset like land or sort loans impoverishing them further.
    • Turufena was one of this moms, unable to afford prescription for her baby's malnutrition and infection, she stayed at home until it was too late, after few weeks the baby was severely wasted and succumbed.

In our community of practice, based in Kakamega county, (western part of Kenya) ,we have 33,000 mothers, like Turufena, living under a dollar a day and with county poverty index of 49.6%, It's easy to understand why maternal mortality rate is still high at 316 deaths per 100,000 while newborn deaths at 19 /1,000 births every year. You can now draw the correlation between generational poverty, out of pocket payments and high mortality.

It's a vicious cycle! We want to break this cycle, and empower mothers like Turufena to seek intervention at the point of need.

These are not mere statistics, but real people, real lives lost, real pain that friends and family have to undergo over time.

      What we need!

As a team, we want to act now, It's urgent that we get Afya Plan to these communities. But without your support, we cannot take off against strong winds of lack of resources. We are seeking to raise $10,000 to help us further develop the platform and to begin working with major partners. Any amount you gift, is a huge stepping stone for Afya Plan. Every dollar will go towards on-boarding 280 women groups in our community of practice, with an ambitious target of directly impacting 6,000 households this year and 200,000 across east Africa in the next 3 years.

Note that Afya Plan has the potential to transform how families access health care across all demographics and health conditions, maternal and infant care is just a start.

And, giving doesn't always have to be monetary, Afya Plan needs partners like you, working with non-profits, government institutions, development partners, community healthcare facilities, impact investment firms and philanthropy to scale it's impact. Your contribution has the ability to help us generate huge impact. When you fund us,you are helping:

      Risks & Challenges

One of our biggest challenges is getting this new product into the hands of those that need it most. Doing it in a sustainable way is not easy, that is why, we believe in delivering impact one household at a time. We are more keen on how Afya Plan delivers value than how it derives it.

As a young start-up, we know we won't always have the right answers, but will do our best to always seek the best answers to challenges in our path to sustainability. That's why we have surrounded ourselves with a very experienced mentors and advisors thanks to GIZ-Make-it in Africa. This is a mission closest to our hearts and we hope that it is to you too. When we come together, Yes, we can make great things happen!
